How to Connect a Cintiq 21UX to an Imac

Save

Connect the Cintiq 21UX to your iMac to use the device as a secondary display with touch-screen and tablet capabilities. The video cable on the Cintiq 21UX uses a DVI video connector. In order to use the device with an iMac running OS X Yosemite, you need to connect an adapter to the 21UX that converts its DVI signal to one that's compatible with your iMac’s video input.

Things You'll Need

  • DVI video adapter
  • Visit the Wacom Legacy Drivers website (link in Resources), click the “Tablet Model” drop-down menu and select “Cintiq 21UX.” Devices are listed in alphabetical order.

  • Click the “Download” button located next to the most recent driver that corresponds to your iMac's operating system. Pay attention to the Date Added field and select the driver with the most recent release date. As of publication, the most recent driver available for an iMac is version 6.3.10-w2, which was released in November 2014.

  • Open the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install the necessary drivers and applications on your iMac.

  • Turn off your iMac.

  • Move the switch on the back of the 21UX to the “DVI” position.

  • Connect the video adapter to the 21UX’s DVI video cable. The type of adapter you need varies depending on the age of your iMac. Recent iMacs have Thunderbolt display ports. In order to connect the 21UX to one of these ports, you need to purchase a DVI-to-Thunderbolt adapter.

  • Connect the video adapter to the display port on your iMac. On recent Macs, this will be the Thunderbolt port, which is located on the back of the computer next to the Ethernet port.

  • Plug in the Cintiq 21UX’s power adapter and then turn the device on. The LED light turns orange when the 21UX is on.

  • Turn on your iMac and wait for it to power up completely.

  • Click the “Apple” menu in the top-left corner of your iMac’s screen, select “System Preferences” and then click “Displays.” Select the “Arrangement” tab and place a check mark in the “Mirror Displays” check box.

  • Connect the Cintiq 21UX’s USB cable to an available USB port on your iMac.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you’ve connected the Cintiq 21UX, calibrate the device to precisely align its screen cursor to its pen tip. Open the Wacom Control Center in the Applications folder on your iMac, click the “Tool” list, select “Grip Pen” and then click “Calibrate.” Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the pen.
  • Use your iMac’s System Preferences panel to customize display settings on the Cintiq 21UX. Click the “Apple” menu in the top-left corner of your iMac’s screen, select “System Preferences” and then click “Displays.” Select the 21UX display and then adjust the settings on your screen. You can adjust a variety of display settings, including color, brightness and contrast.
