If you love to write, become a scriptwriter.

The movie and television industry requires contribution from many different parties, specifically unique and talented actors, producers, technical support, and writers. The writer of a script is almost never acknowledged until the credits roll on a film, however, the script writer plays the initial role in getting the movie, or television program on the air. Without the script, you wouldn't be watching a movie at all. Script writing is a sought after niche in the writing community, due in large part on the vast amount of income one can earn as a successful script writer. Becoming a script writer doesn't just happen overnight. This job takes a great deal of study and practice to perfect this particular craft of writing.

      Study film, or theater writing while in college, or go to an independent film school. Film schools are generally shorter in length than taking a full college curriculum, and many allow students to attend full or part time. Make sure that you place particular emphasis on script writing.

      Read several scripts, and study how they are formatted. Scripts are available at local bookstores and online to download on websites such as Script O Rama and on Fox Searchlight. The key to understanding scriptwriting is to read the scripts and pay attention to all details therein.

      Join scriptwriting groups and consult scriptwriting blogs and forums. You can develop valuable connections in the scriptwriting industry by consulting with other interested parties, and this could lead you toward a lucrative contact like a publisher or filmmaker.

      Search freelance job websites, and writers market references to find jobs writing scripts or collaborating on script writing. Ensure that you follow the publishers specific guidelines for submitting queries or manuscripts if attempting to freelance your work.

  • Consult with publishers and filmmakers by phone only if it is appropriate to do so. Many of these companies do not prefer phone contact or phone query, and doing so could ruin your chances of obtaining a valuable client or job.
