How to Copy a File From a Floppy Disk or CD

You can copy a file from a floppy disk or CD and put it on your hard disk, on another floppy disk or on any other storage media you are using. This allows you to transport files from one computer to another. These instructions are for Windows 98 and the Mac.

    1. Windows 98

      • 1

        Insert the floppy disk or CD containing the file into the appropriate slot.

        Double-click on the My Computer icon.

        Find the icon for the appropriate drive. A: is usually your floppy disk drive. D: is usually your CD-ROM drive. Double-click on the icon to open it.

        Drag the file you want to the location where you want it (perhaps your desktop).

        When you're finished using the disk, press the button on the drive to eject it. (Don't press the button if the light on the drive is on.)

      Mac OS

        Insert the floppy disk or the CD-ROM containing the file into the appropriate slot.

        An icon representing your disk or CD will appear on the desktop.

        Double-click on the icon to open it.

        Drag the file you want to the location where you want it.

        When you are finished, drag the icon of your floppy disk or CD-ROM to the Trash. This will eject it.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can also use the Explore program to copy files. Right-click on My Computer and choose Explore. Your attached drives and desktop items appear in the list at the left. Double-click or click on the plus signs next to the folders and drives to open them, and drag the files wherever you want them to go.

    • Be sure to remove your disk from the drive before you shut down the computer. The next time you try to boot (start) your computer, it won't start properly if there is a disk in the drive.

    • Clicking on the an icon for an empty peripheral drive, such as a floppy disk drive, may cause the Explore program to crash. Inserting your diskette first will prevent problems.
