How to Install Logitech Quickcam Messenger

Installing the Logitech QuickCam Messenger is as simple as popping in the CD and running the automatic setup to install the drivers. However, the Logitech QuickCam Messenger runs fine in Windows XP, but Windows Vista does not provide support for the program. There is QuickCam software available to download that claims to support Vista, but it only works for Logitech QuickCam Messengers with the USB/PID 08DA or the P/N number 861225. There is a way to make all the other Logitech QuickCam Messengers run in Vista, but it requires a few complicated steps and an additional extraction program.

Instructions

  1. Using an XP Driver on a Vista Machine

    • 1

Download and install an extraction program (see Resources).

    • 2

Go to the Logitech website (see Resources) and download the QuickCam 8.4.8 with the driver for Windows XP. Make sure to save it in an easy to navigate to location.

Right-click on the installer \"qc848enu.exe\" downloaded from the Logitech website and select \"Extract to qc848enu\\.\" This will take the contents of the executable and put them in a folder. If the option does not pop up in the right-click menu, open up the extraction program, navigate to the \"qc848enu.exe\" file and extract the contents of the file with the program. The idea behind this is to take the the files the executable would install on XP so that they can be installed into Vista without the executable protesting.

Plug the Logitech QuickCam Messenger into a USB port. An icon should appear indicating that the driver is trying to install. It will fail to install and an \"Add Hardware Wizard\" window will pop up. Click through the wizard and select the option that allows the driver to be found manually. Browse to the \"qc848enu\" folder and select the \"Drivers\" folder. Continue through the wizard to install the XP driver into Windows Vista.

Go to the Logitech website and download the newest version of the Vista-compliant QuickCam software. Run the software to install it normally. Do not worry if at the end of the installation it is necessary to skip the detection of the webcam. The webcam should still run normally without that last step in the installation process.
