Find a space where you will be able to work with a computer and your piano or keyboard simultaneously. A laptop you can move to your piano or a small digital keyboard are options. If you have a desktop and full-size piano, putting them in the same room is ideal for best practice results. The room you select should ideally be quiet to maximize your lesson time.

Choose a method. There are numerous software piano courses available. Select one that offers both interactive lessons and video demonstration. It's important to have a combination of these two features, especially if you are teaching yourself. The interactive feature will force you to practice what you learn and the video element will reinforce what you learn visually.

Apply yourself to the method you select. Start at the beginning and work through the basics. Learn the piano layout and proper sitting and playing technique, then work your way through reading music and playing techniques. Fulfill all of the lessons included in the software and perform any of the interactive tasks. Be careful not to move ahead until you have mastered each section of the course.

Augment your piano software course with free material available on the Internet if you have an Internet connection. Video sites such as Youtube offer videos that teach everything from the basics of playing piano to playing advanced songs, and there are many websites (see Resources) that offer free piano basics and keyboard sheet music that can enhance what you learn with piano software.
