How to Use a Dritz Plier Eyelet Tool
The Dritz eyelet tool is a plier-type device used in sewing projects that creates small, decorative holes in fabric. These pliers, which resemble a paper punch, are inserted in either side of the fabric and pressed to create the hole. Eyelets are surrounded by a sturdy metal or plastic ring, which prevents the fabric from fraying and tearing. Eyelets are most often used on items that have string closures, such as purses, backpacks and shoes.

1
Lay the fabric flat with the pattern side facing downward. Fold the fabric over to a measurement of at least 1/2 inch in the location where the eyelet will be.
-
2
Place a layer of fabric interfacing under the fold and sew it into the fabric using a sewing machine. Some interfacing can be applied with a hot iron rather than sewing.
-
-
3
Mark the desired location of the eyelet on the outside of the garment using a fabric pencil.
-
4
Lift the yellow plastic platform on the Dritz eyelet pliers and turn it sideways until the punch device locks into the place. The punch device looks just like the metal post on a paper punch.
-
5
Place the fabric inside the pliers and position the metal plier post directly over the marked location on the fabric.
-
6
Squeeze the handles of the pliers together until the metal posts penetrate the fabric and create a hole. Remove the pliers from the fabric.
-
7
Place the metal eyelet circle on the lower section of the pliers with the concave side facing downward.
-
8
Insert the pliers onto the fabric and position so that the eyelet is directly centered under the bottom of the hole. Squeeze the handles of the pliers to secure the eyelet in place. The pliers bend the eyelet so that it is secured to the fabric.
