The airbag in your Jeep Cherokee is an important safety feature. If your car is hit or hits another car or object, the airbag opens up and can save your life. There are good reasons to disable the airbag, for example, to install a baby, car seat in the front passenger side or to do car repairs that may accidentally set off the airbags.

Instructions

    • 1

      Disconnect the negative battery cable---the black one---using an 8mm socket. Wait about 30 minutes for the system's reserve charge to drain. Step on the brake to assure that all reserve power is drained.

      Locate the airbag fuse in the fuse box in the center console on the passenger side. Check the sticker on the inside of the fuse box cover to locate the proper fuse. Take out the airbag fuse.

      Lift off the lower section of the steering column panel.

      Disconnect the airbag on the driver's side. Locate the harness for the airbag on the driver's side. Jiggle the harness so the clip holding it in will slide off. Use a flat screwdriver to push the locking pin out from the harness. Now push the clip in and unhook the harness.

      Lift off the dashboard cover.

      Disconnect the airbag on the passenger's side. Lift the foam to locate the wire that connects to the harness. Jiggle the harness so the clip holding it in will slide off. Use a flat screwdriver to push the locking pin out from the harness. Then push the clip in and unhook the harness.

      Re-enable your car's airbags by following Steps 2 through 6 in reverse order.
