How Do I Transfer My Internet Bookmarks to a New Computer?

You can transfer browser bookmarks to a new computer.

When transferring data from an old computer to a new one, you don't want to forget your list of Internet bookmarks or favorites. Most popular browsers use a simple export and import system that allows you to turn your bookmarks into an HTML file that can be saved and transferred. It is also a good idea to export your favorites from time to time just to have a backup of them in case something happens to corrupt your browser.

Instructions

Internet Explorer 8

1. Open your Internet Explorer browser on your old computer.

2. Click on the "Favorites" button, then click on the little black arrow next to "Add to Favorites."

3. Click "Import and Export" from the drop-down menu.

4. Choose "Export to a File," then click the "Next" button.

5. Place a check mark in the box next to "Favorites," then click the "Next" button.

6. Choose which favorites folders you want to export, then click the "Next" button.

7. Choose where you would like to export the Bookmark.htm file, then click the "Next" button.

8. Click the "Export" button to create the Bookmark.htm file, then click the "Finish" button.

9. Transfer the Bookmark.htm file to your new computer.

10. Open your Internet Explorer browser on your new computer.

11. Click on the "Favorites" button, then click on the little black arrow next to "Add to Favorites."

12. Click "Import and Export" from the drop-down menu.

13. Choose "Import from a File," then click the "Next" button.

14. Place a check mark in the box next to "Favorites," then click the "Next" button.

15. Browse for your Bookmark.htm file, then click the "Next" button.

16. Choose the folder where you want to import your bookmarks, then click the "Import" button.

17. Click the "Finish" button once the import is complete.

Firefox 3

1. Open your Firefox browser on your old computer.

2. Click on the "Bookmarks" option in the top bar menu then choose "Organize Bookmarks."

3. Click the "Import and Backup" button and choose "Export HTML" from the drop-down menu.

4. Choose a location to save your bookmarks.html file then click the "Save" button.

5. Transfer the bookmarks.html file to your new computer.

6. Open your Firefox browser on your new computer.

7. Click on the "Bookmarks" option in the top bar menu then choose "Organize Bookmarks."

8. Click the "Import and Backup" button and choose "Import HTML" from the drop-down menu.

9. Choose the "From an HTML file" option, then click the "Next" button.

10. Browse for the bookmarks.html file and click the "Open" button for the bookmarks to be imported.

Google Chrome

1. Open your Chrome browser on your old computer.

2. Click the "Tools" menu. This will look like a little wrench icon.

3. Click "Bookmark Manager" from the menu.

4. Click the "Tools" menu from the Bookmark Manager.

5. Click "Export Bookmarks," choose the location where you want the bookmark HTML file to save, and click "Save."

6. Transfer the bookmark HTML file to your new computer.

7. Open your Chrome browser on your new computer.

8. Click the "Tools" menu. This will look like a little wrench icon.

9. Click "Bookmark Manager" from the menu.

10. Click the "Tools" menu from the Bookmark Manager.

11. Click "Import Bookmarks," choose the location where you saved the bookmark HTML file and open the file to transfer your bookmarks.
