How to Change Shutter Speeds With a Nikon D80
Single Lens Reflex or SLR cameras such as the Nikon D80 include features and options that you don't see on a simple point and shoot camera. For instance, one of the things you can do is change the shutter speed. This is especially useful when you want to take a picture without using flash, or if you want to take a long-exposure shot of a subject, such as a road or the stars.

1
Rotate the "mode dial" on the top-left of the camera (The one that looks like a flat circle with a "S" on it) so that the "S" is next to the black square located next to the gear. This places the camera in "Shutter Priority mode."
-
2
Move the command dial that's located on the back of the camera to the left or right. As you move the dial, the speed of the shutter will move.

3
Monitor the LCD screen on the back of your Nikon until you find the speed you want. Notice the number on the top-left of the screen going up or down as you rotate the command dial. This number is your camera's shutter speed. The camera will use that speed when you press the shutter button for your picture.
-
4
Monitor the Light Sensor located in the lower-left corner as you change the speed. The light sensor will have a "0" in the center, and a "+" and "-" to its left and right. When there is only one dot located under the "0," instead of multiple dots, the camera can take a proper picture.

Tips & Warnings
Use the light meter on your LCD to make sure your picture will appear correctly when shot. However, don't be afraid to experiment with different shutter speeds.
Remember that to make the shot legible, you will need to place the camera on secure ground, such as a wall or tripod.
