How to Have a Heart of Gold
Having a heart of gold requires more than just being compassionate towards others. People with hearts of gold genuinely care about their friends, family and community, and put that care into action. Anyone can worry about the welfare of those around him, but it takes a truly unique individual to put others before himself.

1
Be kind to the people around you. Show people how happy you are to see them and try to make them feel comfortable in social situations. Avoid speaking when angry, and put criticisms gently so as not to hurt anyone's feelings.
-
2
Always remember your obligations to others and go the extra mile to fulfill them. Get your friends thoughtful, personal presents on their birthdays, call them up to find out how a final exam or job interview went and keep tabs on their projects. Be there as a shoulder to cry on if someone you are close to is having a hard time. Part of having a heart of gold is showing that you genuinely care about the events in your friends lives.

3
Get involved in your community. Give charitably if you can, and do some volunteer work. There are many worthy nonprofit service organizations dedicated to giving back to the community.
-
4
Speak up for the oppressed, both locally and globally. If someone is being picked on or unfairly singled out, chime in in his defense. If you see a political injustice being done, get involved in organizing to make a better society. Monitor your own behavior to see that you don't engage in bullying.
