Get A New Social Security Card Easily

Everyone who has a Social Security Number has at one time had a Social Security Card issued to them. You need the Social Security number to get a job and collect Social Security benefits, but you don't need the actual card itself very often.

In fact, the SSA recommends that you not carry your card with you, but that you keep it in a safe place, protecting it from theft and damage. That way, you will keep it in good condition and it will be available if you ever need to show the actual card.

But what do you do if you lose your card or need to get a replacement Social Security card for some reason? It's really not very hard.

Here is how to get a new Social Security Card easily.

Before you submit your application, you will need to gather Evidence of Identity documents that are required.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no cost to get an original Social Security Card or a replacement. Some independent companies charge for you completing and submitting the form and documentation through them, but this is not necessary, and they are not affiliated with the SSA.

  • Once the SSA reviews your application and your documentation, it can take 10 to 14 days to receive your new card in the mail. Total wait time involved could be three to four weeks depending on their workload. If you have applied for a replacement card and have not received it after a long wait, you can contact the Social Security Administration through their toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. You can also contact your local office for assistance.
