How to Install the Oregon Trail Game

Oregon Trail is a classic game that runs on the Disk Operating System (DOS). The game has educational qualities, so it was often used in computer classes for elementary schools. Oregon Trail is still available and can work on modern computers but it takes time to install it. The main issue with installing Oregon Trail on a modern computer is that it runs on DOS and computers are no longer made with DOS.

    • 2

Right-click on the Oregon Trail folder on the desktop and select “Extract All” from the menu.

    • 3

Open your Web browser and download DOSBox. Since Oregon Trail is programmed under the DOS code, it needs a DOS program to work. (See DOSBox download link below.)

    • 5

Open the DOSBox folder once it finishes downloading. Install DOSBox under the same directory that you store Oregon Trail. For example, if you saved Oregon Trail to C:\\Games\\OregonTrail, then you should save DOSBox here as well.

Go back to the Oregon Trail folder and double-click on the main DOSBox icon. Look for the command prompt that says “C:\\OREGON>” and type “setup” directly after it. The command should now say “C:\\OREGON>setup.” Press \"Enter.\"
