How to Compress a WMV File

Shares & Saves

A WMV (Windows Media Video) file is a compressed file format from Microsoft. It contains video and audio information that can be decoded and played back on a video playback program such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. Although WMV is already compressed to save space, you may wish to compress it further and save even more space. During the compression process, the WMV file will be copied and shrunk, but the original will remain untouched.

Things You'll Need

  • Video compression program (see Resources)
  • Download and install a program that is capable of converting a WMV file and compressing it to any quality and size. See Resources for three suggestions.

  • Launch the conversion/compression program you selected in Step 1.

  • Open the WMV file you wish to compress in the compression program you launched in Step 2. To do this, go to "File" and then "Open." Browse for the file you wish to open.

  • Select the compression quality you desire via the "Output" section of your compression program. Choose one that has a smaller bitrate and frame size than the current bitrate and frame size.

  • Select the folder on your hard drive where you would like the compressed WMV file to be saved via the "Output Folder" section of your compression program.

  • Click "Convert." Automatically, the WMV file will be copied, and the copy will be compressed to the desired size and stored to the desired location on your hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • The process of compressing a WMV file may shrink the dimensions of the video and reduce the richness of the video and audio.
