How to Read a Magazine on iPad

The iPad seems tailor-made for reading magazines and newspapers. Publications have been quick to release apps for the mobile device. With the in-app purchase feature now available on the iPad, the apps themselves are usually free. Readers are expected to pay to subscribe or buy individual issues to read on the free app. With the introduction of iOS 5, the new app Newsstand, gathers any existing publication apps you've downloaded and displays them in a central location.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the iPad. Tap the Newsstand app on the iPad home screen.

    • 2

Tap the "Store" button in the upper right corner of the app. Browse the available publication apps and tap the "Free" button of any that interest you. Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted. If you don't yet have an Apple ID, follow the onscreen instructions to acquire one.

    • 3

Tap the "Home" button to return to the iPad home screen when you are finished downloading the publications apps. Tap the Newsstand icon. Tap any one of the apps now displayed in the Newsstand to open it. Some of the apps come with the first issue free. All of them display a screen giving you the opportunity to purchase single issues or subscriptions to their publications.

    • 4

Tap any magazine to read it. Practice scrolling and moving from section to section. Although navigation instructions vary from publication to publication, read the explanations until you get used to this new reading experience.
