How to Get Tailgaters Off Your Bumper

How to Get Tailgaters Off Your Bumper thumbnail
Nobody should be driving so close to endanger your life!

NASCAR has done for normal, everyday drivers what professional wrestling has done for some avid, devoted followers who take to wrestling outside the ring. People have been driving, on interstate highways especially, as if they are racing for the coveted checkered flag.

Although average people take to the streets with an understanding of current driving laws, some drive possessed with the demon of recklessness and wanton cruelty in their high-powered automobiles.

In this article, we will explore this dilemma with several "helpful" hints that, if followed, may help you get tailgaters off your bumper.

WHERE ARE YOU WHEN SOMEONE IS TAILGATING YOU?

In every case, before we point at others for wrongs they may be doing, we should examine where we are and if we are possibly in the wrong ourselves as drivers. Although the posted speed limit on the expressway applies to all the people in all the lanes of traffic, the courtesy to shift lanes to the right for slower traffic helps considerably in eliminating any nasty tailgater off your bumper. Remember to use your directional signals and rear view mirrors properly when choosing to transition into other lanes of traffic.

      DON'T BE A TAILGATER!

If you are guilty of tailgating someone, you really have no right to complain if someone is doing it to you. Rethink your so-called reasons for being in such a hurry; turn down the heart-pounding rock music and stop flashing your headlights in disgust. Safely go around the traffic, using proper signaling and lane changes. This sets a great example for the next generation who might just be in the car with you.

Photograph the tailgater. Show as proof if he hits you in an accident.

TAKE YOUR CAMERA ALONG WHENEVER YOU DRIVE.

The best step of these four steps is this one. When people have been tailgating me lately, and I have considered steps one and two already, I take out my camera, turn it on, turn it around and I take a picture of the people tailgating me. So far in the last couple of times this has happened to me, the tailgater slammed on their brakes and got off the freeway. Unfortunately in Georgia, drivers do not have license plates on the front of their cars as they are required in Texas. Therefore, I could not have anything to show authorities if it ever came down to that.

GET THE BUMPER STICKER THAT MAKES THE TAILGATER THINK!

One good anti-tailgating bumper sticker reads, "Beware Tailgater: I may flick a booger on your windshield." That even gets more effective when you see the driver ahead of you exercising his option. Yuck!

Another good bumper sticker may read, "I may be slow, but I'm ahead of you!"

Make one yourself, like "Tailgaters have major issues in life!"

Tips & Warnings

  • If the tailgater has flashing emergency lights and sirens, get out of their way!

  • Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going.

  • Don't antagonize by using one-finger signals or tapping the brakes.

  • Pray for them! They are obviously disturbed individuals.

  • Check your speed first. The bummer in life is to get pulled over for speeding when all you were trying to do was get away from the jerk on your tail.

  • Don't yell at the police officer who pulled you over; he may have just saved your life!
