How to Remove the Fuel Pump in a 1993 Chevy Blazer
If your 1993 Chevy Blazer is getting bad gas mileage and the motor is stalling out unexpectedly, it might be that you need a new fuel pump. Although replacing a fuel pump on a Chevy Blazer is a moderately challenging task, it can be done well with the right preparation and tools. It will be useful to obtain a Chilton or Haynes Manual for your 1993 Chevy Blazer.

Begin by disconnecting the negative side of the battery. You will also want to place the tools you will need to complete the project near your work area.

Using a jack, lift the rear of the vehicle and using jack stands, securely support it.

Take the fuel cap off and use the siphoning kit to remove the fuel from the fuel tank. If you spill any gasoline, immediately clean the area. Safely store the gas in a cool area away from sparks.

Remove the fuel tank shield if your Chevy Blazer has one. If not, proceed to disconnect the clamp from the fuel filler pipe which is located near the fuel tank. Detach the filter pipe from the filler pipe.

Remove the fuel pump harness connectors from the pump itself. Carefully disconnect the fuel supply and return lines.

Locate your transmission jack and place it directly beneath the fuel tank. Raise it until it is supporting the tank.

Use the socket wrench to remove the bolts from the fuel tank strap. Remove the straps and carefully lower fuel tank using the transmission jack and remove the tank from the Blazer.

Store the fuel tank in well ventilated area that is free of sparks. You will need to work on the tank since the fuel pump is located inside.

Remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank by using the brass punch. Use the brass punch to tap the lock ring counterclockwise until the tabs align with the recessed area of the fuel tank. It is important to use only a brass punch, as a steel punch can cause sparks to fly and possibly ignite, causing a fire or explosion.

Look inside the fuel tank and locate the fuel pump. Be very gentle when lifting it out since the fuel lever float is also located inside the fuel tank, and knocking it against the lock ring could damage it.

Insert the new fuel pump into the fuel tank, again taking caution to avoid hitting the fuel lever float. Use the brass punch to turn the lock ring. Make sure the locking cam is fully engaged by the retaining tabs.

Use the transmission jack to lift the fuel tank back into the Blazer. Replace the fuel tank straps and secure them with bolts.

Replace the return and fuel supply lines and the fuel pump harness connectors to the pump.

Reinstate the fuel filler line by reconnecting the clamp that is located near the fuel tank. Then you can reconnect the filler pipe. If your Blazer had a fuel shield, replace it as well.

Use your siphoning kit to replace the fuel into the tank and replace the fuel cap.

Lower your Blazer by removing the jack stands and lowering the jack.
