How to Use Cots in Tents

How to Use Cots in Tents thumbnail
Use cots in tents for a comfortable night's sleep.

While some campers don't mind roughing it entirely by sleeping on the ground or on a simple mat, other campers prefer to sleep off the ground. You can accomplish this by using an air mattress or a cot. Sleeping on a cot reduces the amount of moisture that accumulates over you and your sleeping bag throughout the night. Choose cots that are comfortable, fold up compactly and can fit in your tent.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a cot that will work for your camping style and budget. Shop where you can see the cot, sit on it and recline on it. Make sure it is long enough to support the entire length of your body. Roll on the cot to check its stability and comfort. Fold the cot up in its storage bag to make sure it will fit into your backpack or duffle bag.

    • 2

Purchase or use a sleeping pad over the cot if you want additional padding or comfort under you while you sleep. A suitable sleeping pad is one that backpackers or campers use when they sleep directly on the ground.

    • 3

Pack your cot into your backpack or duffle bag to transport it to your camping site.

    • 4

Set up your tent at your campsite. Locate the tent on level ground. Avoid areas with tree roots or other obstructions you cannot remove. If you find any sticks or stones, remove them to make the ground under the tent as level as possible.

    • 5

Unfold the cot inside the tent. Ensure that the cot is stable and level inside the tent.

    • 6

Place the sleeping pad on the cot if you will be using one. Place the sleeping bag on top of the pad and your pillow at the top of the sleeping bag.
