1
Select a paper type. For an official-looking birth certificate, use a heavy-stock, slightly tinted paper. Marbled paper also looks great. Use standard document-size paper.
-
2
Place your paper horizontally. Set your document size to have a horizontal layout if you are using a computer. In Microsoft Word, you can customize the size in the "Page Setup" window. Simply switch the traditional document size of an 8-1/2-inch width by an 11-inch height to have an 11-inch width by an 8-1/2-inch length.

3
Create a border. You can invent and draw your own border using permanent markers, or you can select a page border in Microsoft Word. Borders can be found in the "Format" menu of Word. Certificate paper with pre-printed borders are also widely available from paper suppliers.
-
4
Inscribe the name of the hospital where the birth took place at the top-center of the page. Use large, bold text and a fancy font. If you are making your certificate freehand, permanent markers can be used, or if you have the skills, you can use ink and a dip pen to make calligraphic text. If you are using a computer, use at least a 48 point font. Peruse the font styles in Word for one that works for you.
-
5
Inscribe the city and state where the hospital is located just below the hospital name. Use the same font style with a smaller font size. If you are using a computer, use between a 20 and a 24 point font.
-
6
Inscribe the words "Birth Certificate" one-third of the way down the center of the page. Go back to your large font size and feel free to capitalize the text or even change the font style to make this stand out more.
-
7
Inscribe the passage "This certifies that (baby's name) was born to (parents' names) in this hospital at (time of birth) on (date of birth)." Use the same font style as used with the hospital's name and a font size that is somewhat smaller than the size used in the hospital's name. If you are using a computer, use a 26 or 28 point font.
-
8
Use that same font style and size to inscribe the weight (in pounds and ounces) and the measurement (in inches) of the baby at the time of birth. Place this text just below the previous passage.
-
9
In the lower right-hand corner, put signature lines for the mother and the father. Optional signature lines can be included for the godparents, grandparents or doctor.
-
10
Place a gold seal sticker in the lower left-hand corner. Gold seal stickers are available from sticker suppliers. As an option you can also make you own by cutting out a round certificate seal from gold paper. Use zig-zag scissors to create an emblem border and attach it to the certificate with glue.
