How to Repair Snakeskin Handbags

Snakeskin texture appeals to most consumers because of its beautiful scales and exotic shades. Taking care of this type of surface requires some attention. Although repairing snakeskin items such as handbags can seem like an impossibility, you can follow a few home remedies--along with prevention--in order to restore your snakeskin to all of its original glory.

Things You'll Need

• Soft cloths
• Hide glue (mixed or in granule form)
• Cotton swab
• Leather conditioner (for exotic skins)
• Leather matching cream polish (for exotic skins)

Instructions

1. Clean the snakeskin scales with a damp cloth. It is recommended that you dip the cloth in lukewarm water. Gently move the cloth against the grain and under the scales in order to remove any dirt, debris or dry, broken scales from the area. Repeat as necessary until the handbag is clean.

2. Dab a small amount of hide glue unto your cotton swab applicator. Although hide glue is generally associated with woodworking, antique furniture and musical instruments, most leather craftsmen use this adhesive because of its reversible process. Home remedies include the use of contact cement; however, once the cement adheres to the skin, the scale can not be re-adjusted.

3. Reposition the scales by lightly pressing with the cotton swab along the grain. Continue dabbing the curled areas until your scales have completely adhered and the snakeskin is repaired. Let dry.

4. Apply leather conditioner with a separate cloth onto your handbag. Make sure the manufacturer recommends the conditioner is for exotic skins. Apply the conditioner along the grain, not against it. This will ensure added protection and a longer life for your handbag.

5. Apply a leather matching cream polish with a clean cloth. It is strongly recommended that you attempt this in a small hidden area to check for discoloration or shading distortion prior to adding the cream to your overall bag. Allow the cream to set over night and check for any color distortion. Make sure the matching cream polish is for exotic skins. Apply the cream on your handbag going with the natural grain.
