How to Increase Fuel Mileage in a PT Cruiser
With the price of gas seesawing unpredictably, more drivers are looking to find ways of conserving gas and getting more miles for their dollars. Based on the "Fuel Economy Guide" published by the US Department of Energy, a PT Cruiser gets 19 miles to the gallon in the city and 24 miles to the gallon on the highway with an estimated annual cost of $1,864. There are a number of ways for drivers to get the best fuel mileage from their PT Cruisers.

1
Change your driving behaviors. Quickly accelerating at traffic lights, rapid braking and driving over the speed limit are sure ways of wasting gas. By simply driving sensibly, you can cut your gas mileage on the highway by 33 percent and about 5 percent when driving around town.
-
2
Drive the speed limit. Observing the speed limit is not only safer, but also helps to save gas, especially on the highway. For every five miles per hour that you clock over 60, you are wasting an additional $0.24 per gallon of gas. That sort of speeding can add up over time.

3
Shed unnecessary weight in your car. The more unnecessary weight your car carries around, the heavier it will be and the more gas it will use, especially for a smaller vehicle. Each extra 100 pounds in your car can reduce your miles per gallon by 2 percent.
-
4
Stop unnecessary idling. Though your car isn't going anywhere when you idle, it is still burning up gas. It's better to shut off the engine rather than idle and waste gas unnecessarily.
-
5
Use your cruise control. Setting your cruise control, especially on longer trips, is a good way to avoid unnoticed fluctuations in speed and accidental speeding. By running your vehicle at a constant speed, you can conserve fuel.
-
6
Keep your engine tuned. An engine that is dirty, clogged and running less than optimally is not going to be the most economical on gas mileage. By keeping your engine tuned and running well, you could improve your gas mileage by up to 40 percent.
-
7
Keep your tires inflated to the recommended pressure. Making sure your tires are properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by about 3.3 percent. You can usually find the proper tire pressure listed on a sticker on the inside of your door or in your owner's manual.
