It used to be that the front suspension involved a spindle and a series of bearings, which meant that anytime you took off the rotors when you did the breaks, you'd have to get new bearings and seals as well. On a 2005 Dodge Ram 2wd, they use a sealed hub instead, which houses all of the bearings internally, and doesn't need to be changed frequently. If your hub does go out, then replacing it can be done at home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Raise up the front of the vehicle using a jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it. Take off the front wheels using a tire iron and set them out of the workspace.

    • 2

Unbolt the brake caliper and set it on a spare jack stand or any other object that will keep the weight of the caliper off of the brake line, so that the line doesn't break. Side the rotor off of the hub, then unbolt the wheel speed sensor from the back of the hub using the ratchet.

    • 3

Unbolt the hub/bearing assembly from the steering knuckle using the ratchet, then set it to the side. Apple the thread locking compound to the threads on the hub bolts, then bolt the replacement hub to the knuckle using the ratchet.

    • 4

Reassemble the speed sensor, rotor and brake caliper in the reverse order of disassembly. Reinstall the wheels using the tire iron and lower the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack.
