Show Respect to Your Children

One of the best ways to teach your child respect is to be respectful with them, and to those around you. By showing respect to your child, you are setting an example for them. You are teaching them how to treat themselves and others. You are also teaching your child self-esteem and how they should be treated by others when you treat them with dignity.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to your child. Do children say things at times that seem completely random? Yes. However, if you really listen to what you're child is saying, they will feel more comfortable coming to you when it really counts. You will also learn so much about them and who they are becoming.

    • 2

Speak to your child maturely. No, this doesn't mean you should talk to your children like another adult. What it means is to explain to them why they should be complying with your request, or why you can or cannot fulfill any of their requests. Try not to take the, "because I said so" approach. Every situation can be a learning opportunity. By being logical and honest with them, you allow them to grow and learn.

    • 3

Look at your child in the eyes when having a conversation with them. This allows them to see that you are engaged with them and that they have your full attention. Treat them like their opinions and feelings matter to you.

    • 4

Stop and think about what you are going to say when you are angry. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, you may say something nasty that you don't really mean. Your goal is to express your disapproval without name calling or belittling your child. This will also help them to express their feelings in a mature manner.

    • 5

Use your manners. Always try to use "please" and "thank you" when you are making a request of your child. The manners that you teach them go a long way into training them to do the same with you and others.

    • 6

Be kind to your child. Being a parent is hard work, and sometimes it's easier to address the negatives than to point out the positives. Much like the relationship with your mate, or the relationships you have with friends, make sure that you point out positives about your child as much as possible. This gives them self-confidence, and makes them feel loved and respected.

    • 7

Take care of yourself. This is so difficult because generally we consider what we do by ourselves and what we do for our children separate issues. But honestly, they are not that far apart. By taking care of yourself and giving your child an excellent life role model, you are in effect teaching them how they should respect and take care of themselves through healthy living.
