Instructions

    • 1

First search your computer for the deleted files. The easiest and most simple place to start is your computers recycle bin.

    • 2

If the files have already been emptied from the recycle bin next you can try restoring your computer to a date before the files were deleted. This will no delete your current files.

    • 3

If it has been too long since the files were deleted for you to recover them using system restore the next step is to download a recovery program such as Disk Digger or another downloadable program. I prefer Disk Digger because it lets you see each file before it saves them to your computer and it is free.

    • 4

If you downloaded Disk Digger open and install the program.

    • 5

Run program and set up the options you would like to use. If simple file search doesn't work you can try to search for the file by name.

    • 6

If this does not work use the dig deeper option. Choose which types of files you wish to search for. Disk Digger will search for various picture files, windows media player files and text files.

    • 7

If it is for example picture files you wish to search for select the types you want included in the search. JPG and other formats are usually associated with personal camara files.

    • 8

Next let the search begin and wait for the results. As each file comes up you can open it and preview what it is while Disk Digger is still working. Select restore if you want to keep the file or move on to the next one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disk Digger will not harm your computer but it will slow it down while it is digging. It is best to close other programs.

  • Dig Deep is usually the best option and will produce the most results.

  • Sometimes the files are too old or corrupt to be recovered or they will be fragmentary.

  • In certain cases you may be shocked at what you find Disk Digger will generall pull up all files. This includes pornographic images. In a sense it is a good tool to see if anyone has been using your PC for porn such as to see what your kids have been viewing, but in some cases it may be shocking if you do not expect porn to be there and find it is.
