Cleansing the "Run History" is a simple chore.

The Windows "run" command, accessible through the Start Button, stores your commands in its history, making known what programs and commands you have run easily accessible to anyone at your computer. But cleaning out the history is quite easy and only takes a few minutes. Because this involves editing the Registry it is highly recommended that you establish a "System Restore" point before you do this.

  1. Starting With Start Button

      Click on the Start button in the toolbars lower left corner. This will open a small "Run" window.

      In the Open line type "regedit." Your "Registry Edit" will now open in its own folder.

      Look for the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder and expand it if necessary by clicking on the "+" button to the left of the icon.. This will allow you to see the sub-folders.

      Scroll down to the "Software" icon, open it, and then open in order...

      CurrentVersion

      And then click directly on the "Run" icon

      Your "Run History" will now appear to the right in the windowpane of the editor.

      If you wish to delete a program from the history, right click on it and select "Delete". Provide confirmation to your choice and that command will be cleansed from History.

      Continue until you are through and then click "File > Exit" to finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be very careful when editing the Registry. This provides much of the basic information to Windows as to how your computer and software are configured, and any inadvertent changes may have a negative impact on running your programs.
