How to Use a Lockstitch Sewing Awl
The sewing awl is an invention meant to aid craftsman in working with heavy fabrics such as sails and leather. This tool is an excellent way of saving time when sewing items such as saddles, leather jackets or even leather furniture covers. In essence, the lockstitch awl works as a manual sewing machine, enabling the user to create a lockstitch that is similar to that created on a standard sewing machine.
Instructions

-
1
Measure your project, then cut a double allotment of thread.
-
2
Thread the awl's needle.
-
-
3
Place the awl in your right hand and the bottom thread in your left.
-
4
Push the awl through the material at your desired starting point.
-
5
Anchor the thread on the material's top portion by putting the thread between the awl's handle and your thumb, loosening the thread on the back at the eye and pulling the unanchored piece of thread through the hole that was made with the awl. Pull the thread tight.
-
6
Lockstitch down the entire piece by inserting the awl a stitch-width from the last hole (1/8 inch). Pull a loop into the thread next to the eye and push the bottom thread through the loop.
-
7
Pull the awl back through and pull the loop tight.
-
8
Repeat to the end of the piece, then tie off.
