How to Pick a Bearded Dragon at the Pet Store

The bearded dragon is a popular reptile because the foods it requires are easy to find and its size remains small enough that it does not require a lot of space to keep. The dragons are also easier to care for than other types of lizards and prefer not to be handled a lot. In order to choose the right bearded dragon, there are several things that should be considered.

1. Watch the bearded dragons as you approach the cage at the store. A healthy bearded dragon will watch your approach with curiosity and will have bright, alert eyes.

2. Handle the bearded dragon and check him thoroughly for any sores or external parasites. Also check for any deformities, keeping in mind that a missing toe or tip of the tail is not considered a serious deformity.

3. Check the eyes for pus or any other gunk that may be embedded. The eyes should be clear.

4. Make sure the lizard is at least six weeks old.

5. Check for signs of respiratory infection: gaping, noisy breathing, and mucus discharge from the nose and mouth. Such an infection is usually caused by low temperatures, high humidity or both, and the dragon most likely will need to see a vet.

Tips & Warnings

• It is best to chose a bearded dragon that is six inches or longer as babies tend to have more problems with stress and illness.

• Be aware that a bearded dragon has a lifespan of up to 10 years. You should not purchase one if you are not prepared for long-term ownership.
