How Do I Save a Copy of My Website?

Your website is stored on another computer--called a server--that anyone on the Internet can connect to in order to view the page. Like most computers, servers can eventually fall victim to hard drive failures or other errors. If this happens, your website may be lost. It is a good idea for you to save a copy of your website just in case your host loses the information. You can save your website simply by navigating to the website with your home browser and saving each page. Some browsers allow you to save multiple pages or even an entire site at once.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Internet Explorer and access the Favorites menu. Click "Add to Favorites." Click the "Make available offline" check box to tell Internet Explorer to save a copy of the website to your hard drive. Press the "Customize" button to tell the application to save pages from a given number of links deep. This means that Internet Explorer automatically navigates through the website and downloads the pages it comes across. Click "Finish" to save the website.

Open Safari and navigate to your website. Click on the File menu and choose "Save As." Use the drop down menu next to Format to choose your options; "Page Source" saves a copy of the website's code (the HTML), while "Web Archive" saves all the documents, images and any content including Java, Flash and other scripts in a folder on your hard drive. Name the file or folder, and click "OK" to save the website.

Access your website in Firefox, and click on the File menu and the "Save Page As" option. Give a name to your website that you will remember, and choose a location on your hard drive to save the website. Firefox automatically downloads the HTML files, images and other content including the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) code used to set up the layout and color scheme of your website.

Tips & Warnings

  • Download your website periodically, especially after you have made large changes. This ensures that you always have a current version stored on your hard drive.
