How to Reduce Smog
Smog issues are becoming more prevalent across the United States, and not just in urban areas. Poor air quality can have a dramatic effect on people who have respiratory issues, such as emphysema and asthma. There are several things each individual can do on a daily basis to reduce the amount of smog in the air and help everyone to breathe a little easier.

1
Drive your car less. Take your car to work three days a week and ride public transportation the other two. This will cut down on the emissions from your car that contribute to smog.
-
2
Organize a car pool at work. Ask your co-workers to car pool with you to and from work. Take turns driving and you will also save money on gas.
-
-
3
Turn off your car if you are idling for longer than 10 seconds. This will cut down on fuel waste and unnecessary emissions coming from your car.
-
4
Take your car for regular maintenance checks. This will ensure that the car is running properly and not burning fuel inefficiently.
-
5
Use yard tools that don't use gasoline. According to the California Air Resources Board, a lawn mower that is gas powered will emit as much pollution as a car that is running for 13 hours. Pull out the push mower and a rake instead.
-
6
Build a compost pile in your backyard instead of throwing trash on the curb. This will cut emissions generated by garbage trucks because it will require less stops at your home. The compost can be used to fertilize a garden, which will cut down on your trips to the grocery store for produce.

7
Consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle. These cars run on electricity as well as gasoline, and do not produce as many emissions as traditional fuel-burning vehicles.
