How Do I Change the Drive Name for My Flash Drive?

A flash drive is also referred to as a thumb drive.

Flash drives are USB-based portable storage devices that provide an easy way to store data quickly and transport it to other computers. Flash drives come with a default drive name, which may not be as readily recognizable or personalized as you desire. Changing the drive's name can make your flash drive easier to recognize in a drive list, which is especially important if you plan to use the drive on several PCs.

Instructions

1. Insert your flash drive into an open USB port, and close or minimize the window for the drive when it opens.

2. Click on the "Start" button, and then open "My Computer."

3. Locate the USB flash drive in your drive list (it is typically the last drive in the list), right-click on it, and select "Rename."

4. Enter a new name for the drive, and then click on blank space to close the name editor.

Tips & Warnings

• Alternatively, you can right-click on the drive, select "Properties," enter a new name in the "Label" field on the "General" tab, and click on "Apply."

• Including your own name in the name of the drive can be a good idea--this way, if you accidentally misplace the drive, any user that comes across the drive is more likely to figure out that the drive is yours.
