How to Reset an Acer TravelMate Notebook Standby
Since Windows 98 there has been a problem with computers going into standby or sleep modes and never waking up. As hardware and software become further integrated as a single entity, a computer's operating system and BIOS work together more and more as one. Shutting down the Acer TravelMate notebook and rebooting it will no longer fix the problem when the computer goes into a coma. Now you must act as a defibrillator to bring your computer back from the almost dead.

1
Place the ESD strap on your wrist. This strap discharges static electricity from your body. The human body can build up enough static electricity to short out high-performance electrical circuitry. Since you will be removing the RAM from your TravelMate, you need to discharge excess built-up electrical static.
-
2
Disconnect all cables and external peripheral devices from the TravelMate notebook. You don’t want any random electrical currents running through the system as you work on it.
-
-
3
Place the TravelMate on a flat surface upside down. You may want to set a towel, or something similar, under the laptop to prevent scratching the top of your notebook.
-
4
Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the RAM bay door. There will be a small icon to represent your RAM bay. If you are not sure which door to open, consult your computer’s documentation for the RAM bay location. Typically, there are two screws to remove the door. Set the screws and door off to the side till your ready to put them back on.
-
5
Remove the RAM. There will be small clamps that hold the RAM into place. Remove the clamps and pull the memory out of the DIMM socket it rests in.
-
6
Underneath where the RAM was is a small jumper switch. The switch will be very small and labeled "J1."
-
7
Using the Phillips-head screwdriver, touch both pins of the jumper simultaneously. This will short out the internal on-board memory of the TravelMate. This will not cause any damage to the notebook. This is called a hard reset.
-
8
Put the TravelMate back together, reconnect all of the cables and peripherals, and boot up the computer.
