Dyeing clothes is an expensive, creative way to give something new life and a new look. Rit dye is the most commonly used ready-made dye.   • Rubber tub
  • Plastic gloves

Instructions

      Place a drop cloth, such as plastic bags or a tarp, under the tub, and put on the plastic gloves. Fill tub with enough hot water to allow the fabric to move freely.

      Put the clothing in the tub, then add the dye according to package instructions. Stir constantly for 10 to 30 minutes.

      Remove the clothes from the tub and rinse them in warm water, gradually adjusting the water to be cooler and cooler until the water runs clear. Allow the clothing to air dry.

      Clean the tub immediately with chlorine bleach or a chlorine-based powder or liquid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Generic clothing dye can be purchased from some paint stores. This type of dye--and natural dye from flowers--will need the addition of soda carbonate to help the dye bond to fabric.
