How to Make My Icons Smaller on My PC

If you have large icons and oversize windows on your computer, there are many possible causes. You may have bought a new monitor to match your new computer or a previous owner preferred large icons and windows. Whatever the case, there are a couple of ways to change icon size. Depending on whether you want to just change your icon size or all objects on your display, the process is easy.

Instructions

  1. Change Desktop Icon Size

    • 1

Minimize or close all running programs to access your computer's desktop.

    • 2

Right-click the desktop to bring up a contextual menu.

    • 3

Select "View" from the menu and select the icon size that best fits your needs.

Change Screen Resolution To Adjust Icon Size

    • 4

      Right-click your computer's desktop.

    • 5

Select "Screen Resolution" from the resulting contextual menu.

    • 6

Click the drop-down menu next to the "Resolution" field and select the "Recommended," or highest available, resolution. This will reduce your icon size as well as the other display components of your computer including your task bar, menus and program windows.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to hide the icons altogether, you can click the check box next to "Show Desktop Icons" to remove the check mark and hide the icons.
