How to Scan Satellite Receivers

Scanning a satellite receiver may be necessary during the initial installation of your satellite television service. You also might need to rescan your satellite receiver after an interruption of service or a power outage. For applicable receivers which allow manual scanning without the assistance of a technician, the process only requires pushing a few buttons on your satellite television receiver’s remote.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open your satellite receiver’s "Main Menu" by pushing the corresponding button on either its remote or the device itself. This will open a menu display on your television set. Select the “Satellite” menu if given the option. Do this to access your service provider’s satellite.

    • 2

Select your desired satellite in the “Satellite Name” or similar field if there are multiple signal options. Ignore this step if you only have access to one satellite.

    • 3

Choose the “Auto Scan” option to perform a scan that reveals your satellite television service provider’s pre-programmed channels. Auto scan is the simplest and most common scanning procedure, as it eliminates all guesswork involved in deciding which channels to add.

    • 4

Choose the "Blind Scan" option if you have not found all of your desired channels after an auto scan. Blind scan displays the complete list of channels on a satellite. Keep in mind that you may not have access to all of the channels that appear in your blind scan result.

    • 5

Choose the "Transponder Scan" option if your satellite service carrier allows, provided neither the auto scan nor blind scan locate your desired channel. Enter the satellite name, transponder number, frequency, symbol rate and polarity for each transponder you wish to scan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attempt "Auto Scan," "Blind Scan" and "TP Scan" in that order to locate your channels. This, of course, depends upon which of these scanning options your satellite service provider allows.
