How Do I Change My Start Menu Position From Horizontal to Vertical?

The Start menu on Microsoft Windows operating systems defaults to being located in a horizontal position at the bottom of your screen. You may find that's not the optimal place for your particular work style or computer screen. Newer widescreen laptop computers, for example, have more room along the sides of the screen and this can be a useful place to put your Start menu and Taskbar.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Windows 98, ME, XP or Vista

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click a blank area of the taskbar and find the line "Lock the Taskbar." If there is a checkmark on that line, left-click it once to remove the checkmark and unlock the Taskbar.

    • 2

Left-click a blank area of the Taskbar and hold the mouse button down.

    • 3

Drag the Taskbar to a vertical position on the left or right side of your screen, then release the mouse button.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you try to click and drag from a folder section of the Taskbar, the Taskbar will not move. If you have a lot of folders and icons on your Taskbar, try clicking and holding the mouse button in or near the System Tray instead.
