Instructions

    • 1

Moisten the dried mortar with water to make it easier to remove. Dampen several rags and saturate the mortar with the water.

    • 2

Scrape off as much of the mortar as possible using wooden sticks. You can buy wooden sticks at most home improvement centers or craft them yourself. Sweep the loosened mortar away with a broom and dust pan and discard. This will likely remove the larger clumps of mortar, but there will still be some left on the tile.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle with 10 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar. Spray a generous amount of the vinegar water directly onto the dried mortar. Allow it to sit on the mortar for about five minutes.

    • 4

Scrape away more clumps of mortar with the wooden sticks and discard with the broom and dustpan. Continue applying more vinegar, as needed, so that the dried mortar stays saturated.

    • 5

Fill a bucket with plain warm water. This will be used for rinsing.

    • 6

Scrub down the face of the tiles with a nylon scouring pad and the vinegar solution. Rinse the pad often in the bucket of plain water. Continue scrubbing the tile while adding more vinegar, rinsing the rag frequently in the plain water, until all of the dried mortar has been removed.

    • 7

Rinse the tile with a rag and plain water to remove any mortar and/or vinegar residue. Buff the tile dry with a soft rag.

    • 8

Repeat the scrubbing process, if necessary, until all of the mortar and film is gone from the tile. It may be necessary to clean the tile several times to remove all of the haze from the mortar.
