How to Disable BIOS Memory for Windows XP

BIOS (basic input output system) is a low-level operating system that controls certain facets about your computer's hardware, such as the processor speed and memory timings. Disabling the BIOS memory settings such as the shadowing and cacheable settings will help to improve performance with your Windows XP system. These BIOS memory settings are throwbacks from earlier operating systems, which are no longer necessary under Windows XP.

Instructions

    • 1

      Restart your computer.

    • 2

Press the key indicated during the start-up messages to enter BIOS. This key is typically either "Esc" or one of the "F" keys.

    • 3

Navigate to the "Advanced" settings menu by pressing the left and right arrow keys.

    • 4

Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the settings for "Shadowing" and "RAM Cacheable." Press "Enter" after highlighting both entries and select the "Disabled" option.

    • 5

Press "Esc" then press "Y" to exit and save changes.
