How to Post Beyond the Character Limit on Facebook

How to Post Beyond the Character Limit on Facebook thumbnail
Bypass the character limit by using a link.

Facebook introduced status character limits in summer 2010, requiring that status messages must be shorter than 420 characters long for Facebook to accept and post your words. While this may seem adequate for most messages, you may occasionally need to post a longer status message for your friends. You can do this by posting your message as a comment accompanying a link rather than as a traditional status, therefore bypassing the character limit altogether.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign in to your Facebook account. Click the "Link" button above the status message bar.

    • 2

Type or paste a link into the field. It can be any link of your choosing, although remember that your friends can see the link and click to connect with the page. A link to your personal blog or a website that correlates with your status is appropriate. When you're ready, click "Attach."

    • 3

Enter your message into the "Say something about this link" field. Doing so bypasses the character limit, because as of the time of publication, there is no character limit on link descriptions.

Use the arrows to choose a picture from the website you've posted, or click the "No Thumbnail" box to go without a picture. You can also remove the default site description by clicking the text directly below the site address, or change the website name by clicking it and editing accordingly. Removing the site name, picture and description makes the link look more like an actual status update.

      Click "Share."
