How to Use 4 Wheel Drive in Geo Tracker
Using the four wheel drive feature in your Geo or Chevy Tracker can be convenient and will help you maintain control on slippery surfaces. The Tracker uses a three-speed transfer case that is shifted manually by way of a shifter inside the vehicle. With several gear ranges, it will allow you to choose the one that best suits your needs. Whether you are driving off-road or in snow, rain or ice, four wheel drive can be the difference between being stranded and making it home.

1
Decide how much extra traction you require for the driving conditions. Four wheel drive high range is the most commonly used setting, and will work in most cases.
-
2
Shift the transfer case selector from 2H or two wheel drive into 4H or four wheel drive high range to engage the front axle. If you are traveling at less than 60 mph, you do not need to stop the vehicle. If this does not provide the traction needed, you will need to switch to 4L.

3
Stop the vehicle in a safe area. Place the transmission gear selector into neutral, and then pull the transfer case selector from 4H to 4L on the selector. Shift the transmission gear selector back into drive and resume driving. If 4L is no longer needed, shift back to 4H.
-
4
Stop the vehicle and shift the gear selector into neutral. Push the transmission gear selector forward from 4L through the N or neutral position without stopping, and into the 4H position. Resume driving your Tracker. If you no longer need four wheel drive, shift back to two wheel drive.
-
5
Remove your foot from the throttle briefly while shifting the transfer case gear selector from 4H to the 2H position. Resume driving as normal in two wheel drive.
