Instructions

    • 1

Combine 6 cups of granulated sugar, 3 cups cold water, 2 tbsp. light corn syrup, and 1/8 tsp. of salt in a large saucepan. Add 1 oz. of peppermint oil to the mixture, and stir until well blended.

    • 2

Heat the mixture in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Continue to stir the mixture until all the sugar dissolves.

    • 3

Bring the mixture to a full boil. Use a spoon to keep the crystals off the sides of the pan.

    • 4

Add the cream of tartar once the mixture boils. Keep heating the mixture until it reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer.

    • 5

Line a cookie sheet with confectioner's sugar. You will only need a fine dusting.

    • 6

Pour the liquid mixture onto the cookie sheet. Allow the candy to harden slightly. Use a rubber mallet to break the mints into small pieces, or cut the candy into strips while it is still relatively hot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean and sanitize the rubber mallet or scissors before using them to break apart the breath mints.

  • Add a few drops of food coloring to make colorful breath mints.

  • When cutting the breath mints with scissors, you will need to make sure that the candy does not harden all the way.

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from the heat and sticky texture.
