How to Make Breath Mints
If you constantly find yourself buying breath mints at the convenience store, then you may want to make your own homemade mints. Making breath mints at home requires a few basic ingredients, and does not take a lot of time out of your day. Breath mints make great gifts for friends and family members, and you can tweak the recipe to suit your own tastes. Things You'll Need
- 6 cups granulated sugar
- 3 cups cold water
- 2 tbsp. light corn syrup
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1 oz. peppermint flavoring oil
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- Candy thermometer
- Cookie sheet
- Confectioner's sugar
- Rubber mallet
- Scissors
- Airtight container
- Wax paper

Combine 6 cups of granulated sugar, 3 cups cold water, 2 tbsp. light corn syrup, and 1/8 tsp. of salt in a large saucepan. Add 1 oz. of peppermint oil to the mixture, and stir until well blended.

Heat the mixture in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Continue to stir the mixture until all the sugar dissolves.

Bring the mixture to a full boil. Use a spoon to keep the crystals off the sides of the pan.

Add the cream of tartar once the mixture boils. Keep heating the mixture until it reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer.

Line a cookie sheet with confectioner's sugar. You will only need a fine dusting.

Pour the liquid mixture onto the cookie sheet. Allow the candy to harden slightly. Use a rubber mallet to break the mints into small pieces, or cut the candy into strips while it is still relatively hot.

Tips & Warnings
Clean and sanitize the rubber mallet or scissors before using them to break apart the breath mints.
Add a few drops of food coloring to make colorful breath mints.
When cutting the breath mints with scissors, you will need to make sure that the candy does not harden all the way.
Wear gloves to protect your hands from the heat and sticky texture.
