As each webcam is different, it is best to follow the instructions that come with the webcam in how to set it up, connect it, install the associated programs and drivers and get it to focus correctly. Each webcam will come with an instruction booklet detailing how to set it up.

Position your webcam in a location that can capture what you want captured, whether it be yourself, the area behind you or something different. Be sure to position your camera where there won't be a light shining directly into it as this will white out the image.

At this point you may want to test out the software that comes with the camera. This will allow you to adjust settings for quality and focus better than other programs will.

    Determine Use and Begin Broadcasting

    • 4

First, you need to decide what you are using the camera for. If you are doing a streaming webcast, you will need to know how to set up a web server that will host streaming video, prepare a webpage to display the video and configure the camera to publish to the webserver in a single datastream.

If you are using the camera for video conferencing, you need to know which program you will be using so you can configure the camera with that program. Each program is different and has a set up system that is easy to follow to associate the camera with it.

Once you have tested the camera and the desired programs to make sure they work and look correct, you can begin broadcasting, whether it's via a streaming video server or with a video conferencing program.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are streaming video constantly to a webserver, it is a good idea to remotely check the webserver to make sure it is getting a feed of what you are recording. If it's not getting the feed, you will have a chance to fix the problem before you lose traffic.

  • Be sure to shut down your video conferencing after a conference call or streaming broadcast. Same goes if you are doing a streaming broadcast. If you do not shut it down, people may see something you do not want them to see.

  • Having a camera hooked up to a webserver means that people can see anything that that camera is recording at any time. If you are using a webcamera to monitor your child's room as a baby monitoring device, for example, it is possible for other people to find that and view it too.
