How to Make a Birdcage Blusher Veil

Bridal birdcage style veils are short veils that cup the head of the bride and gather to clip in the hair above and behind the ear. Often the birdcage veil will also feature decorative floral, feathered or vintage jewelry clip at the center of the gather. This allows the veil to look like a hat as well as a veil. Instructions

    • 1

Cut tulle to 36 inches by 9 inches with scissors. Use tulle that has the wider-style netting. This is sometimes called French or Russian veiling.

    • 2

Sew a small, white, plastic comb-type clip at the top corner of the veil parallel with the 9-inch side. Repeat with the second clip on the opposite end of the tulle.

    • 3

Thread a needle. Make a square knot at the bottom corner of one 9-inch side of the tulle. (The clip is at the top of the tulle.) Weave your needle through (all 9 inches) of the diamond openings of the tulle 1/4 inch from the edge of the tulle. Weave from the bottom corner knot to the bottom of the clip.

    • 4

Slip the needle through the bottom hole in the small hair clip. (Each hair clip typically has two holes.) Pull the thread and gather all of the side tulle together. Loop the thread through the hole in the hair clip several times and then knot firmly. Repeat for the second side and clip.

    • 5

Double thread your needle (four thread strands) and knot the ends of the thread to the upper hole of one hair clip. Weave the needle through the diamond pattern of the 36-inch length of the top of the tulle. Thread the needle through the top hole of the second clip and begin to gather your clips together. When the clips are about 6 inches apart fit the veil to your head in the position you want.

    • 6

Adjust the remaining tulle by changing the length of the thread between the two clips until you achieve the gathered effect you need. Loop the needle through the top of the second clip several times and knot off once you have the correct length. Trim off any uneven tulle edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach flowers, feathers, vintage brooches or other decorative elements to the top of the veil to further disguise the clips.
