How to Edit a PSD File

PSD, short for photoshop document, is the native file format of the Adobe Photoshop image editing software. Unlike common graphics formats such as JPEG, PNG or GIF, PSD files can include layers containing text, transparency, spot colors, clipping paths, masks, levels and many more. Editing a PSD file requires installation of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, its more sparsely featured sibling program. The quickest and least expensive way to edit a PSD file is to download and install a trial version of Photoshop Elements.

      Download Adobe Photoshop Elements. Open your web browser and enter the address of the Photoshop Elements trial download website (see the References section).

      Install the Photoshop Elements program files to your computer.

      Open Photoshop Elements. Click the Windows Start button, then select "Programs" and "Adobe." Click the item labeled "Adobe Photoshop Elements" to launch the program.

      Open the file you want to edit. Click "File" on the menu at the top of the screen, then select "Open." Locate the PSD file you want to edit, double-clicking its icon to open it. You can now make changes to this file or export it to an image file format of your choosing.
