How to Smooth the Relaxer
The smoothing process is an important step during the relaxer hair treatment, as it evenly distributes the chemical over the new growth while avoiding the previously relaxed hair. This process ensures the chemical relaxer is able to weaken the chemical bonds in the hair, which produces uncoiled or "relaxed" hair. The smoothing process should be the final step of your hair treatment, and should be followed with thoroughly washing your hair to prevent overprocessing. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Press the back of your comb against the chemically-covered hair. Start at the roots of the new growth and push the comb to the end of the new growth.
-
2
Comb the relaxer through the new growth. Use a round tooth comb to gently comb the mixture from the roots to the ends of the growth. Do not comb the relaxer through all of your hair, as it can lead to overprocessing and severe breakage.

3
Press your fingers against the new growth to smooth it. Wear latex gloves to protect your hands from chemical burns.
-
4
Allow the relaxer to sit on the hair as directed by the relaxer's processing time instructions, and wash your hair thoroughly with warm water to remove the chemical. Pour the relaxer kit's neutralizing shampoo into the palm of your hands, and work the product through your hair.
-
5
Rinse your hair with warm water. Shampoo your hair twice to restore your hair's pH balance, which stops the relaxer from altering your hair.
-
6
Coat your hair with the kit's conditioning creme, and allow it to sit for seven to 10 minutes. Rinse the conditioner out with cool water, and coat your hair with a leave-in conditioner. Style as usual.
