How to Size a Helmet
Motorcycle helmets are designed to protect your head against traumatic impacts and debris. However, your helmet must be properly fitted in order to provide a maximum level of protection. With the staggering amount of helmets available at your local dealership, finding a helmet that fits your head properly can be difficult as manufacturers build helmets to fit a wider variety of head shapes. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help you find the right helmet.

1
Measure your head with a tape measure. Position the tape measure an inch above your eyebrows and wrap it around your head until it meets at the center of your forehead. Motorcycle helmets are sized by inches and centimeters, so take note of both measurements.
-
2
Cross-reference your head size against the helmet sizing chart available at most motorcycle dealerships. If a sizing chart is not available, helmets usually include their sizing on labels attached to the plastic sheet on the face shield or sewn into the inner lining. Select the helmet that matches your head size as closely as possible. If your head size is in between two different helmet sizes, start with the smaller helmet first.

3
Try the helmet on. Hold the helmet by its chin straps and gently pull them outwards to spread the sides of the helmet slightly. Place the helmet onto your head and pull it downwards. The helmet should fit snugly but not be painfully tight.
-
4
Check that your temples are seated against the helmet's inner lining. If you are trying a full-face helmet, be sure that the helmet's chin bar does not touch your nose.
-
5
Fasten the chin strap and shake your head from side to side. The helmet should fit snugly enough that you feel your cheeks moving slightly. If the helmet slides across your skin as you shake your head, the helmet is too loose and will be easily buffeted by wind.
-
6
Remove the helmet and take note of any pressure points within the helmet. If there is any soreness or red spots on your head or face, select another helmet that is a size larger or has a different shell shape.
-
7
Try on several different helmets until you find one that is secure and comfortable. Wear the helmet around the store or dealership for a few minutes. If you are still comfortable after wearing it for a while, you have found the right helmet.

Tips & Warnings
Wear your helmet at all times, even if your state does not require mandatory helmet use. You only have one head: protect it.
Do not buy a helmet based simply on hat or head size. Each helmet is designed for a specific head shape and may not necessarily fit your head.
Avoid helmets that do not have a Department of Transportation certification label. These helmets have not been tested, or have failed safety testing and may not offer any form of protection in the event of an accident.
Avoid used or second-hand helmets. The previous owner may have been involved in an accident that could have weakened or damaged the helmet's integrity.
