How to Multiply in an Excel Spreadsheet

Whether creating a table, calculating data, forming a graph or making an interactive form, Microsoft Excel can make your document accurate and efficient. Using Excel to multiply is one example, and this can be done in couple of different ways. Even across the different versions of Excel, these methods are generally the same and will only differ slightly on appearance and location. Depending on your purpose, one method will work better for you.

Instructions

  1. Multiply Using the Formula Bar

    • 1

Open Microsoft Excel and click on the cell in which you want to enter the formula.

    • 2

Type an equal sign (=) in the function bar near the top of the screen.

    • 3

Type your formula after the equal sign using the asterisks (*) as your multiplication sign. Depending on what you want to multiply this will look different. If you know the numbers, then enter the formula as number * number (for example: =3*5). To multiply based on a figure in a specific cell, click the cell and add your asterisks and the number you want to multiply by (for example: =A1*5).

    • 4

Press "Enter" to complete the formula and the product will show up in the cell.

    Multiply Using the Product Function

    • 5

Click on the cell in which you want the product to appear.

    • 6

Go to Insert>Function and choose Product.

    • 7

Enter the numbers that you want multiplied into the text boxes labeled "Number 1, Number 2, Number 3," etc. If you want numbers that are already typed in specific cells, then click on the cell instead of entering the number by hand. Clicking on multiple cells within the same text box will cause the program to use the sum of those cells as one of the numbers you want to multiply.

    • 8

Press "OK" and the product will appear in the cell.
