Grounding yourself and dissipating all static electricity from your body is an important measure that can protect your computer's inner components.

      Prepare your work station by eliminating the area of anything that can potentially create static electricity. Work on a bare table and removing all unnecessary items. Be sure to remove any plastic items, office supplies and rolling chairs. More importantly, do not work on carpet.

      Turn off your computer and unplug it from the wall. Many newer computers have constant voltage running through the motherboards and other components when the computer is plugged in, even if the system is off. A wrong move could build up static electricity.
