How to Run a Phone Wire to a DSL Modem

Even though DSL Internet service sends and receives signals from the Internet using a standard telephone network, you cannot connect your modem to a phone jack using standard phone wire. You need to use a high quality modem cable designed specifically for this purpose, and it needs to be connected to both your DSL modem and your phone jack in a very specific way in order to work properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a phone line filter to the phone jack in your wall. Simply connect the regular phone cord that comes off of the filter to the jack like you would a regular length of phone wire. Phone line filters prevent static during phone conversations.

    • 2

Plug one end of your DSL modem cable into the phone jack on the phone line filter. When the cable is inserted properly, it will make a clicking noise, which is the plastic lock securing the cable into place.

    • 3

Plug the other end of the DSL modem cable into the "DSL" input on the back of your DSL modem. Once connected, information will be sent through the modem cable to the phone line filter, at which point it will be passed to the phone cable and out to the Internet via your regular telephone lines.
