How to Fix Windows Boot Sector

The Windows boot sector is a special part of the hard drive that contains information that the computer uses to boot up the operating system. Fortunately, with a few minutes of time and an operating system disc, you can fix the Windows boot sector and get your computer functioning again.

  1. Windows XP Boot Sector Repair

      Power on your computer and press the required key to boot from the CD drive. This key is usually either a function key, such as F10, F11 or F12 or it is the DEL key. Once you reach the boot menu, insert your Windows XP installation CD, choose to boot from the CD and wait for the CD to boot.

      Press the "R" key once you reach the Windows Setup screen. Choose the Windows installation to which you want to boot, then enter your Administrator password.

      Type "FIXBOOT" at the command prompt press the "Enter" key, type the letter "Y" and press the "Enter" key again. This will automatically repair the Windows boot sector. Once the process finishes, type "EXIT" at the command prompt to restart the computer. Remove the CD from the computer and allow the machine to boot.

    Windows Vista or 7 Boot Sector Repair

      Turn on your computer and insert your Windows Vista or 7 installation DVD.

      Press the necessary key to boot from the DVD drive. This is usually one of the function keys such as F10, F11 or F12 or the DEL key.

      Select the language you want to use, what type of currency you use, the type of keyboard to use and then click the "Next" button.

      Click the "Command Prompt" button in the System Recovery Options window, and then type "BOOTREC.EXE" at the command prompt (without quotes), and press the "Enter" key. Wait for the automated boot sector repair process to complete, remove the DVD and restart your computer.
