How to Change CHKDSK Settings
Check Disk is a Windows utility that checks a computer's hard drives for errors and fixes them. Regularly running this utility will help keep a Windows PC running smoothly. You can adjust the scan settings in Windows XP and Windows 7, the two versions of Windows currently used on most computers. Both versions allow for a "read only" option that will only scan for problems, but not fix them, as well as an option for automatically fixing errors, and another one that will attempt to recover information from bad sectors on the scanned drive.
