How to Change CHKDSK Settings

Check Disk is a Windows utility that checks a computer's hard drives for errors and fixes them. Regularly running this utility will help keep a Windows PC running smoothly. You can adjust the scan settings in Windows XP and Windows 7, the two versions of Windows currently used on most computers. Both versions allow for a "read only" option that will only scan for problems, but not fix them, as well as an option for automatically fixing errors, and another one that will attempt to recover information from bad sectors on the scanned drive.

Instructions

  1. Changing Check Disk Settings in XP

    • 1

Click the start menu and select "My Computer."

    • 2

Right-click on the icon of the hard disk to be checked and select "Properties" from the menu and select "Tools."

    • 3

Select "Check Now" under "Error Checking."

    • 4

Select "Automatically fix file system errors" and/or "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Leave both boxes blank to run Check Disk in "read only" mode. The most comprehensive scan will be done by checking both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors."

    • 5

      Click "Start."

    • 6

Restart the computer if prompted to do so. When the computer restarts the scan will begin automatically.

Changing Check Disk Settings in Windows 7

    • 7

Open the "Start" menu and select "Computer" in the right-hand column.

    • 8

Right-click on the drive to be scanned and select "Properties" and "Tools."

    • 9

Select "Automatically fix file system errors" and/or "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Leave both boxes blank to run Check Disk in "read only" mode. The most comprehensive scan will be done by checking both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors."

    • 10

      Click "Start."

    • 11

Restart the computer if prompted to do so. When the computer restarts the scan will begin automatically.
