How to Convert Index to RGB in Photoshop

Photoshop lets you use digital files in several different modes. Index mode is often used to reduce a file's size so it loads more quickly on the web. However, many of Photoshop's advanced editing features are not available for files in Index mode. Because of this, you have to first convert the file to RGB mode. This is a simple and quick process.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Index file in Photoshop. Go to "File," then "Open," and then select the file from its location on your computer.

    • 2

Re-save the file under a new name. It is good practice never to alter your original or starting file and to do all your editing and changes on a copy. Once you save it under a new name, the file on your screen will be the copy rather than the original.

    • 3

Change the mode of the file. Go to "Image," then "Mode," then click "RGB." Save the file again. The file that remains on your screen is the copy of the original, but now in RGB mode.

    • 4

Edit the file. Make whatever changes you need to on the file, then save it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Whenever you edit a file, it is a good idea to save it frequently. Then if your computer freezes or the power suddenly goes out, you will still have a copy of the file with most of your edits on it.
